The
Casino Business
A
casino is where people go to gamble and play games of
chance such as roulette, blackjack and craps. These
games have mathematically determined odds that ensure
that the casino has an advantage over the players. This
is called the House Edge and is how casinos generate
their profits.
In Europe casinos have been in existence since the 1600s
the first one probably being found in Venice. The first
official casinos did not arrive in America till the
1930s with the legalization of gambling in the state
of Nevada. Since then they have given rise to huge gaming
and gambling resorts such as Las Vegas and Reno. Las
Vegas in particular is now a Mecca for tourists and
gamblers with huge hotels and casinos with thousands
of slot machines and gaming tables.
In recent years the casino business has moved into a
new era. With the development of the internet casinos
have moved a lot of their business online. People no
longer have to go to the casino if they wish to gamble,
they can do it from the comfort of their own home. In
particular the popularity of poker games on the internet
(especially the variant known as Texas Hold ‘Em)
has lead to huge profits.
People love to gamble and while they do casinos and
casino owners will continue to make huge profits. With
the new era of online gaming and the continued popularity
of Poker and other card games online this looks set
to continue well into the future.
